Beschreibung "Born in Algeria in 1907, Gilbert Cohen-Séat completed his schooling in Bordeaux and Paris, and in 1929 embarked on a career as a journalist. The founder of at least two film production companies, Orsay-Films and Bertho-Films (with A. Berthomieu), he became the chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee of Cinema in 1936, and in 1938 served as the president of the master craftsman program for the French film industry. In 1946, the same year in which his Essai sur les principes d'une philosophie du cinéma appeared, he worked as editor-in-chief of the Appel de la Haute-Loire, published by the Departmental Committee of Liberation. A filmmaker in his own right, he demonstrated a concern for the social role of the cinema by directing such educational shorts as Classe enfantine. As a filmmaker, scholar, statesman, author and businessman, Cohen-Séat was a figure respected by those in French academia, politics and the film industry at the time his Essai first appeared. His varied background provided a basis and a validity for the breadth of concerns treated in his volume on the cinema, enabling his followers to designate him "truly a man of the cinema." The text published by Cohen-Séat in 1946 was originally conceived as only the first volume of a much longer Essai. This volume, subtitled "The Cinema in Contemporary Civilization," was to be followed by three others: volume II, "Aesthetics and Individual Psychology"; volume III, "Cinematic Values and Collective Mentality"; and volume IV, "Methodology." The subsequent volumes never appeared. The exact reason for this is unclear, although the quick appearance of the Revue Internationale de Filmologie, less than a year after the publication of volume I of the Essai, provided a forum for the general discussion of those topics proposed by Cohen-Séat for his later volumes."
